Barton - MacNelly Home

310 East Lee Street

This home was built sometime before 1900 as 1900 census record Mr. Bayless Barton and his wife Mary lived here with their 5 daughters and 1 son, aged 3 to 19 years of age.  Mr. Barton was a carpenter and farmer.  Their eldest daughter, Maggie, taught school in Weatherford at the time.

By 1910, Dr. Charles MacNelly and his German wife Anna Frieling had purchased the home.  Dr. MacNelly graduated from the University of Nashville and did the post graduate work at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA where he and his wife married.  They moved to Weatherford in 1899.

He volunteered his services in World War I where he served as Captain of the Medical Corps 55th Regiment.  He was treasurer of four Masonic organizations here spanning 25 years, and one of the founding members and Post Commander of the local American Legion.  Perhaps his greatest gift to Weatherford was providing free medical care to widows and orphans of the Pythian Home for more than 20 years.  He died in this home in 1944.
