The Pythian Home

1825 East Bankhead

 

Built in 1907 in the style of a French castle, this unique structure was constructed by the knights of a Pythias, a fraternal organization espousing friendship, charity, and benevolence.  The Home began as a residence for orphans and windows, housing gardens, a dairy, orchard, and livestock on its 110 acre lot.  These features allowed the home to be self-sustaining and provide trade-learning opportunities for young residents. Changing state laws and regulation eventually denied the home its self-sustaining capabilities, and it is now supported largely by private sectors donations.  The home also housed a school until the 1960’s which served students from throughout the country. While numerous cities vied for the honor of constructing this striking edifice, local businessman James T. Cotton, himself an orphan, was credited with winning the honor for the city of Weatherford.
