Charles Barthold Home

The home was built in 1877 by Charles Barthold Sr., a leading merchant in Weatherford. The Victorian style house features a wide center hall and double doors leading out to the back porch.  Of particular interest in the front of the house are the large clay urns crafted by Mrs. Barthold.  The original iron fence and gate are still in place across the front of the property.

The brothers Charles and Edwin Barthold were born in Saxony, German Empire in the 1820’s.  They came to New York and later to Mount Enterprise, Texas where they owned a successful business.  When the building was lost to a fire, the brothers and their families moved to Weatherford, where they owned and operated a very successful mercantile business.

Charles married Jane Rettig in Rusk County in 1856 and they had nine children.  She was a gifted artist.  Her paintings, tapestries, wood-burnings and sculpture enhance many homes in Weatherford.  Their daughter Edith, widow of James Simmons, and their daughter Edie, lived in the home with them for many years.  Edie was married to Robert Carter and continued to live there until her death in 1990.  The family is buried in City Greenwood Cemetery.
